One Decision. Two Hours. A Skill You Will Have for Life.

Every 11 seconds, someone in the United States needs CPR. That’s not a statistic—that’s a person. A parent. A child. A friend. And in that moment, the difference between life and death often comes down to one thing: whether someone nearby knew what to do.

Picture this: You’re at your child’s soccer game on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The referee suddenly collapses on the field. Parents gasp. Someone yells for help. But here’s the reality—paramedics are 7-10 minutes away. The person on the ground is losing oxygen by the second. In those critical minutes, CPR can double or triple their chance of survival. But only if someone acts. Only if someone knows how.

What if that person could be you?

Why CPR Skills Matter More Than You Think

Most of us live with an unspoken fear: What if something happens and I don’t know what to do? That helplessness is worse than the emergency itself. CPR training eliminates that fear and replaces it with confidence, clarity, and the power to save a life.

Cardiac events don’t announce themselves. They don’t wait for convenient times or for trained professionals to be nearby. A heart attack can happen at home, at work, at a grocery store, or during a family dinner. When it does, the next 4-6 minutes are critical. Brain damage begins within minutes without oxygen. Without CPR, survival rates plummet to near zero.

But here’s the empowering truth: You don’t need to be a doctor, nurse, or athlete to perform CPR. You just need to know the steps. And those steps? They’re learnable, memorable, and life-changing. In just two hours at Delacruz CPR Academy, you’ll transform from someone who feels helpless into someone who can act with purpose and precision.

The Simple Step-by-Step Response You’ll Learn

Effective CPR follows a straightforward sequence that you’ll practice until it becomes second nature:

Check Responsiveness and Call 911

First, ensure the scene is safe. Then tap the person’s shoulders and shout, “Are you okay?” If there’s no response, immediately call 911. Don’t assume someone else will call. Be the one who does. Every second counts.

Position and Hand Placement

Place the person on their back on a firm surface. Position yourself at their side. Place the heel of one hand on the center of their chest, then place your other hand on top. This is where your compressions will happen.

Start Compressions

Push hard and fast at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. The pressure should be strong enough to push down at least 2 inches. Yes, you might break ribs—but that’s okay. A broken rib heals; death doesn’t.

Rescue Breaths (If Trained)

After 30 compressions, give two rescue breaths if you’re trained to do so. If not, hands-only CPR (continuous chest compressions without breaths) is also highly effective, especially for adults.

Continue until emergency responders arrive or the person shows signs of life. Your job is to keep that oxygen flowing to the brain.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Being too gentle: Many people hesitate to push hard enough. Push firmly. The goal is to circulate blood, not comfort.
  • Stopping too soon: Don’t stop compressions until paramedics arrive or the person wakes up. Giving up is the only guarantee of failure.
  • Panicking and freezing: This is why training matters. When you’ve practiced, muscle memory takes over when fear tries to freeze you.
  • Worrying about liability: Good Samaritan laws protect people who perform CPR in good faith. You’re protected when you help.

When to Call 911: Don’t Second-Guess Yourself

Call 911 if someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally. Don’t wait. Don’t hesitate. Don’t try to diagnose the problem first. If you’re unsure, call. The dispatcher can guide you, and help is on the way.

Remember: A false alarm is far better than a missed opportunity to save someone’s life.
