One Decision. Two Hours. A Skill You Will Have for Life.

One Decision. Two Hours. A Skill You Will Have for Life.

It’s 3 PM on a Tuesday afternoon. Your neighbor collapses while checking the mail. Your child’s soccer coach falls to the ground during practice. A colleague suddenly stops responding at the office. In these terrifying moments, every second counts—and the difference between life and death often comes down to one thing: whether someone nearby knows CPR.

Here’s the reality that keeps us up at night: Over 350,000 cardiac arrests happen outside of hospitals every year, and survival rates drop by 7-10% with every minute that passes without CPR. But here’s the hopeful truth—studies show that bystander CPR can double or even triple a person’s chances of survival. You don’t need to be a doctor, nurse, or medical professional. You just need two hours and the decision to learn.

Why CPR Certification Matters More Than You Think

Many people assume CPR is something “other people” need to know—paramedics, lifeguards, healthcare workers. But the reality is sobering and personal: most cardiac emergencies happen at home or in public spaces, not hospitals. That means the person most likely to help is someone just like you. A family member. A friend. A stranger who happened to be in the right place.

When someone’s heart stops, brain damage begins within minutes. CPR keeps oxygen flowing to vital organs while emergency responders are on their way. It’s not about performing perfect medical interventions—it’s about buying time. It’s about being the person who doesn’t freeze, doesn’t panic, and knows exactly what to do.

Beyond the life-saving aspect, CPR certification gives you something invaluable: confidence and peace of mind. Instead of standing helplessly by, you become the person who takes action. That transforms both how you see yourself and how those around you feel knowing you’re prepared.

What You’ll Learn: The Step-by-Step Response

When you complete CPR training at Delacruz CPR Academy, you’re learning a straightforward, proven system. Here’s what you need to know:

Check Responsiveness and Call 911

First priority: alert emergency services. Tap the person’s shoulder and shout “Are you okay?” If they don’t respond, immediately call 911. Get an AED (automated external defibrillator) if one is nearby—have someone grab it while you start CPR.

Position and Begin Chest Compressions

Place the person on their back on a firm surface. Position the heel of your hand on the center of their chest, place your other hand on top, and push hard and fast at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. You’re aiming for the rhythm of the song “Stayin’ Alive”—yes, really. It works.

Deliver Rescue Breaths

After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths. Tilt the head back, lift the chin, pinch the nose, and breathe into their mouth. Continue the cycle until help arrives or an AED is ready.

Use an AED if Available

AEDs are designed for non-medical people to use. Turn it on, follow the voice prompts, and let it guide you. It’s that user-friendly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Waiting for perfect conditions: Don’t worry about doing it “perfectly.” Imperfect CPR is infinitely better than no CPR. You cannot make things worse.

Stopping too soon: Keep going until emergency responders arrive or you’re physically unable to continue.

Forgetting to call 911 first: Getting professional help on the way is your top priority. Don’t waste seconds trying to figure out how to help alone.

Being afraid of causing injury: A person in cardiac arrest is already in crisis. Your actions can only help.

When to Call 911: No Second-Guessing

If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, call 911 immediately. Don’t hesitate. Don’t wait to see if they “get better.” Don’t worry about embarrassment or false alarms. Emergency responders would much rather respond to someone who doesn’t need them than miss someone who does.
