Every 11 seconds, someone in the United States experiences a life-threatening cardiac event. But here’s what’s even more startling: survival rates jump from 6% to 74% when someone nearby knows CPR.
Imagine this. You’re at your daughter’s soccer game. A parent collapses on the sideline. Their face goes pale. Their breathing stops. Everyone freezes. And then—your mind shifts into clarity. You know what to do. You step forward. Your hands move with purpose. You’re the reason that person gets a second chance at life.
This isn’t a fantasy. This is what happens when ordinary people like you decide to invest just two hours in learning CPR.
Why This Decision Matters More Than You Think
Let’s be honest: most of us avoid thinking about emergencies. We tell ourselves, “That won’t happen to me or anyone I know.” But cardiac events don’t discriminate. They happen at work. At home. At the gym. In public places where you’d never expect them.
The difference between life and death often comes down to minutes. Emergency responders are incredible, but they can’t be everywhere instantly. That gap—those crucial moments between collapse and arrival—is where you become the hero.
When you know CPR, you’re not just gaining information. You’re gaining confidence, purpose, and the ability to act when others panic. You become the person everyone looks to. The person who doesn’t freeze. The person who saves lives.
And here’s the beautiful part: this skill stays with you forever. Once you learn it, you carry it with you for the rest of your life—ready to use when it matters most.
Understanding the Step-by-Step Response
CPR might sound complicated, but it’s built on simple, repeatable steps. When you take a Delacruz CPR Academy course, you’ll learn the exact sequence:
Check and Call
First, assess the situation. Is the person responsive? Are they breathing? If not, call 911 immediately. Don’t wait. Don’t hesitate. Make that call your first priority.
Position and Prepare
Place the person on their back on a firm, flat surface. Tilt their head back slightly to open the airway. This simple positioning makes all the difference.
Hand Placement and Compressions
Place the heel of one hand on the center of their chest. Stack your other hand on top. Push hard and fast—at least 100 compressions per minute. You’re literally pumping blood to their brain and heart, buying them time until help arrives.
Rescue Breaths
After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths. Pinch their nose, seal your mouth over theirs, and breathe—two slow, steady breaths. Then return to compressions.
That’s it. Thirty compressions. Two breaths. Repeat until help arrives or the person shows signs of life.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Knowing what not to do is just as important as knowing what to do.
- Waiting for perfect conditions: Don’t wait for an AED. Don’t wait to feel completely confident. Start CPR immediately. Imperfect CPR saves lives. No CPR means almost certain death.
- Stopping too early: Keep going until emergency responders arrive or the person shows clear signs of life. Exhaustion is real, but so is the temptation to give up too soon.
- Panic-induced hesitation: Your fear of doing something wrong can paralyze you. Remember: doing something imperfectly is infinitely better than doing nothing.
- Forgetting the basics: In emergencies, muscle memory takes over. That’s why hands-on practice during training is so critical.
When to Call 911—And Why It Matters
Call 911 immediately upon discovering someone is unresponsive and not breathing. Don’t second-guess yourself. Dispatch operators are trained to help you through the process. They want you to start CPR, and they’ll guide you.
If you’re alone, put your phone on speaker and begin CPR right away. Modern smartphones also have emergency features that can summon help with voice commands.
Many public spaces now have Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). If one is available, have someone retrieve it while you start CPR. These devices are user-friendly and provide voice-guided instructions.
How to Get Prepared—It’s Simpler Than You Think
