One Decision. Two Hours. A Skill You Will Have for Life.

One Decision. Two Hours. A Skill You Will Have for Life.

It’s 2 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon. You’re at your child’s soccer game, standing on the sidelines with a coffee in hand. Suddenly, a parent two rows over collapses. Their face goes pale. They’re not breathing. Everyone freezes. Someone screams. Someone else is already calling 911. But those crucial minutes—the ones that determine whether this person lives or dies—those minutes are happening right now.

What would you do?

The truth is, every year in the United States, over 350,000 people suffer cardiac arrests outside of hospitals. Most of them never make it because bystanders don’t know what to do. But here’s the hopeful part: you could be the one who changes that outcome. In just two hours, you can learn CPR—and that single decision could save someone’s life.

Why CPR Training Matters More Than You Think

CPR isn’t just for doctors or paramedics. It’s for you—the neighbor, the parent, the friend who happens to be in the right place at the right time. When someone’s heart stops, brain damage can begin within minutes. But CPR keeps oxygen flowing to their brain and body until professional help arrives.

The statistics are humbling and powerful at once:

  • People trained in CPR are two to three times more likely to perform it when needed
  • Early CPR can double or even triple survival rates
  • For every minute without CPR, survival odds decrease by 7 to 10 percent

That person at the soccer game? If someone trained in CPR had stepped in immediately, their chances of survival would have been completely different. You can be that person. And the best part? You don’t need to be superhuman to do it. You just need to be prepared.

How to Respond: The Simple Steps You’ll Learn

CPR is actually much simpler than most people think. Our instructors at Delacruz CPR Academy break it down into clear, manageable steps:

Check Responsiveness and Call for Help

Tap the person’s shoulders and shout, “Are you okay?” If they don’t respond and aren’t breathing normally, call 911 immediately or have someone else call while you begin CPR.

Position and Hand Placement

Place the person flat on their back on a firm surface. Put the heel of one hand on the center of their chest, then place your other hand on top. You’re now ready to save their life.

Compressions and Rhythm

Push hard and fast on the chest at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute (think of the beat of the song “Stayin’ Alive”—it’s actually the right tempo). Push at least 2 inches deep. Continue until help arrives or the person starts breathing.

That’s it. You’ve got this.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

We see hesitation hold people back. Don’t let it be you. Here are the myths we debunk in every class:

  • “I’ll hurt them.” A person in cardiac arrest is essentially already gone. Your compressions won’t make things worse—they’re the lifeline.
  • “I don’t know mouth-to-mouth.” Hands-only CPR (compressions without rescue breaths) is just as effective and what we recommend for most situations.
  • “What if I do it wrong?” Imperfect CPR is infinitely better than no CPR. The goal is to keep blood flowing to the brain until help arrives.
  • “I’m not strong enough.” You don’t need superhuman strength—just the willingness to push hard and fast.

When to Call 911: Don’t Second-Guess Yourself

Here’s the hard truth: call 911 immediately if someone collapses and isn’t responding or isn’t breathing normally. Don’t wait. Don’t assume someone else will call. Don’t hesitate. Dispatcher-assisted CPR is real, and professional help needs to be on its way the moment you recognize a crisis.

When the paramedics arrive, you step back and let them take over. But those minutes you bought with CPR? They could mean everything.
