Every 11 seconds, someone in America needs CPR. That’s not a statistic—that’s a reality that could touch your life today, tomorrow, or next week. Imagine this: You’re at your child’s soccer game when the coach suddenly collapses. Your spouse is having dinner with friends when someone at the next table loses consciousness. Your parent is visiting and something goes terribly wrong. In these moments, the difference between life and death often comes down to one thing: whether someone nearby knows CPR.
Two hours. That’s all it takes to learn a skill that could save someone’s life—maybe someone you love. At Delacruz CPR Academy, we’ve trained thousands of people just like you, and we can tell you with certainty: this is the most important decision you’ll make this month.
Why CPR Matters More Than You Think
When someone’s heart stops, brain damage can begin in just four to six minutes. Without oxygen, permanent harm—or death—can occur in that short window. The scary truth? Professional help is often minutes away. The encouraging truth? You can be the help that’s there right now.
CPR isn’t a complex medical procedure reserved for doctors and nurses. It’s a straightforward, learnable skill that anyone—regardless of age, strength, or background—can master. When you know CPR, you’re not hoping someone else steps in. You become the person who steps in. You become the difference between a tragedy and a second chance.
And here’s something else: learning CPR changes you. Students who complete our courses report feeling more confident, more capable, and genuinely empowered. They carry that confidence into every aspect of their lives.
How CPR Works: The Basic Steps You’ll Master
CPR is built on a simple foundation called the “chain of survival.” Here’s what you’ll learn to do:
Step 1: Check Responsiveness and Call 911
Your first job is to confirm the person is unresponsive and immediately call emergency services. Don’t wait. Don’t assume someone else will do it. Call 911 right now.
Step 2: Position the Person
Place the person on their back on a firm, flat surface. Clear the airway and prepare for the next step.
Step 3: Hand Placement and Compressions
Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest, place your other hand on top, and push hard and fast. You’ll perform chest compressions at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. This keeps blood flowing to the brain and vital organs.
Step 4: Rescue Breaths (if trained)
After 30 compressions, provide two rescue breaths if you’re trained in this technique. If not, hands-only CPR (compressions alone) is also highly effective, especially for adults.
Step 5: Continue Until Help Arrives
Keep going. Don’t stop. Don’t second-guess yourself. The professionals will take over when they arrive.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Our instructors see the same fears come up repeatedly, and we want to address them head-on:
- Fear of doing it wrong: The only truly wrong response is doing nothing. CPR that isn’t perfect is infinitely better than no CPR at all.
- Stopping too soon: Don’t give up after a minute or two. Continue compressions until emergency responders arrive or the person shows clear signs of life.
- Hesitation due to worry about “breaking ribs”: Yes, aggressive compressions can sometimes cause rib fractures. But here’s the reality: a broken rib heals; a stopped heart doesn’t.
- Assuming you’ll “just remember” what to do: You won’t. Training matters. That’s why certification keeps you sharp and ready.
When to Call 911: Don’t Overthink It
If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, call 911 immediately. Dispatcher-assisted CPR is available—they’ll talk you through it. But honestly? By the time you finish this blog post, you could be trained to handle it yourself. Why leave it to chance?
